Scientists indicate that cells react to these two cannabinoid compounds in a positive fashion and play an important role in normal stomach function as well as the immune system’s response. The body apparently produces its own cannabinoid molecules, called endocannabinoids, which increases the permeability (pass through) of the epithelium (a thin layer of cells) at the time of inflammation, indicating that overproduction may be damaging.
They were able to reverse this process using the plant-derived cannnabinoids, which appear to allow the epithelial cells to form tighter bonds and restore the membrane buffer.The study was carried out using cell cultures in a dish but surprisingly, when the research team attempted to mimic the conditions of the stomach, limiting the amount of oxygen to the cells’ natural environment, they discovered lower concentrations of cannabinoid were needed to produce the same effect.
